Ражда се на [[25 март]] [[1906]] г. в добре обезпечено финансово семейство с леви, феминистични и антивоенни възгледи. Майка му е член на [[Коминтерн]]а, а негов дядо е съосновател на [[Комунистическа партия на Великобритания|Комунистическата партия на Великобритания]].
 
В периода 1924 – 1927 г. изучава съвременна история в [[Оксфорд]]. По време на [[Втората световна война]] Тейлър служи в опълчението и се вижда с видни политически емигранти от Европа - – бившия министър-председател на Унгария граф Михай Карой и президента на Чехословакия [[Едвард Бенеш]].
 
Жени се 3 пъти. През 1984 г. пада под гумите на автомобил и вследствие на тежките травми и развитието на болестта [[Паркинсон]] постепенно загубва способността да пише.
