Учен и преподавател. Той е първия папа французин. Прави опит за установяване на класическите науки, като [[Аритметика|астрономия]], [[Математика|математика]] и [[Астрономия|астрономия]] в Европа, въвежда наново сметалото и армиларните свери, изгубени за Европа от края на Гръко-римската епоха. Заради опитите му да изкорени [[Симония|симонията]] и други видова корупция в Църквата и положителното му отношение към познанията на античния свят, изникват слухове, че той е магьосник в съюз с [[Сатана|Дявола]]. Умира в Рим в [[1003]] г.
