  • Centre: Coat of arms of Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese) (1468-1549, reigned as pope from 1534) on Palazzo Farnese Rome, sculpted by Michelangelo Buonarroti.

  • Right: (sculpted post 1585) Farnese quartering per pale Austria and Burgundy ancient, with Pale of Holy Church with Umbraculum, with Portugal overall in pretence. Surrounded by the Collar of the the Order of the Golden Fleece (to which he was appointed in 1585). Coat of Arms of w:Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza (1545-1592), the son of w:Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Parma (1524-1586), the second son of Pier Luigi Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza (1503-1547), the eldest son of w:Pope Paul III. In 1565 Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza married w:Infanta Maria of Guimarães (1538–1577), "Maria of Portugal", one of the three daughters and co-heiresses of Duarte, Duke of Guimarães (1515-1540), the sixth son of King Manuel I of Portugal and his wife Maria of Aragon. Thus the royal arms of Portugal are shown in pretence. The Pale of Holy Church with Umbraculum possibly was first awarded to w:Pier Luigi Farnese (1503-1547) the first Duke of Castro from 1537 to 1545 and the first Duke of Parma and Piacenza from 1545 to 1547, the illegitimate son of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, who later in 1534 became Pope Paul III. Pier Luigi Farnese was appointed in 1537 w:Captain General of the Church and w:Gonfalonier of the Church (or Papal Gonfalonier), possibly the causes of the original grant of the Pale of Holy Church with Umbraculum as an heraldic augmentation.

  • Left: (apparantly a match with shield of his nephew at right dated post 1585) Coat of arms of Cardinal Ranuccio Farnese (1530-1565), 3rd son of Pier Luigi Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza (1503-1547), the eldest son of w:Pope Paul III (thus uncle of w:Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza (1545-1592), whose arms appear at right). The chief of Savoy indicate a connection with the Knights of Malta. In 1540 he was appointed Prior of the Knights of Malta's important property San Giovanni dei Forlani in Venice.
