Friend of Hum.
“Needy Knife-grinder! wither are you going?
“Rough is the road, your Wheel is out of order.
“Bleak blows the blast: – your hat has got a hole in’t,
So have your Breeches!
“Weary Knife-grinder! little think the proud ones.
Who in their Coaches roll along the turnpike-
-road, what hard work ‘tis crying all day “Knives “and Scissors to grind O !”
“Tell me, Knife-grinder, how came you to grind knives?
Did some rich man tyrannically use you?
Was it the Squire? or Parson of the Parish?
Or the Attorney?
Was it the Squire for killing of his Game? or
Covetous Parson for his Tythes distraining?
Or roguish Lawyer made you lose your little
All in a law-suit?

Drops of compassion tremble of my eye-lids,
Ready to fall, as soon as you have told your
Pitiful story”

Knife-grinder.
“Story! God bless you! I have none to tell, Sir,
Only last night a-drinking at the Chequers,
This poor old Hat and Breeches, as you see,were
torn in a scuffle
“Constables came up for to take me into
Custody: they took me before the Justice:
Justice Oldmixon put me in the Parish-
-Stocks for a Vagrant.
I should be glad to drink your Honour’s health in
A Pot of Beer if you would give me Sixpence;
But for my part, I never love to meddle
With Polities, Sir.

” Friend of Hum.
“I give thee Sixpence! I will see thee damned first.
Wretch. whom no sense of wrongs can muse to ven-
-geance
Sordid, unfeeling, reprobate, degraded
Spiritless outcast!

(Kicks the Knife-grinder, overturns his Whell, and exit in
a transport of republican enthusiasm and universal
philanthropy)

Menschenfreund.
„Armer Scherenschleifer! Wohin des Wegs? „Uneben ist die Straße, und dein Rad nicht in Ordnung.
„Kalt bläst die Bö: – Dein Hut hat ein Loch,
Ebenso Deine Hosen!
„Müder Scherenschleifer! Die Stolzen,
Welche in ihren Kutschen rollen über die Zoll-
-straße, denken nicht nach darüber
Welch‘ schwere Arbeit ’s ist zu rufen den ganzen Tag
„Messer und Scheren zu schleifen, O!”
„Erzähle mir, Scherenschleifer, wie kamst Du zum Schleifen der Scheren?
Tat ein Reicher Dich tyrannisch mißbrauchen?
War‘s der Junker? oder der Pastor der Pfarrei?
Oder der Rechtsverdreher?
War‘s der Junker wegen eines getöteten Wildes? Oder
Der begehrliche Pfaff‘ um seinen Zehnten zu beschlagnahmen?
Oder der windige Advokat, der Dir Dein kleines Vermögen
in einem Prozess abknöpfte?
„(Hast Du nicht die Rechte des Menschen von Thomas Paine gelesen)
Ein Tropfen des Mitleids quillt aus meinem Aug‘,
Und wird hinunterfallen, sobald Du mir erzählt hast Deine
erbärmliche Geschicht‘”.�

Scherenschleifer.
„Geschichte? Gott segne Euch! Ich habe keine zu erzählen, Herr.
Nur gestern Abend beim Saufen im „Schecken“,
Da wurde dieser arme alte Hut und die Hosen, wie Ihr seht,
zerrissen bei einer Rauferei.
„Polizei kam und nahm mich in
Arrest: Sie brachten mich vor den Richter:
Richter Oldmixon ließ mich in den
Pranger stecken als Vagabund.
Ich würde mich freuen auf Euer Ehren Wohl zu trinken
Mit einem Maß Bier, wenn Ihr mir einen Groschen gebt;
Aber ehrlich gesagt, will ich nicht ’rummachen
Mit Schmeicheleien, Herr.

” Menschenfreund.
„Ich geb‘ Dir gleich Groschen! Ich möchte Dich zuerst verdammt sehen.
Schurke. Welcher keinen Sinn hat dafür, dass Unrecht nach Rache
schreit.
Schäbiger, gefühlloser, verkommener, entarteter
Geistloser Ausgestoßener!

(Gibt dem Scherenschleifer einen Tritt, schmeißt dessen Karren um, und verschwindet von der Szene im Hochgefühl republikanischer Begeisterung und universeller Menschenliebe.)
