В основата на индуизма се намират множество религиозни текстове, които се разделят на две групи – ''[[шрути]]'' („чути“) и ''[[шмрити]]'' („запомнени“). Те разглеждат въпроси на [[Индуистка теология|теологията]], [[Индуистка философия|философията]] и [[Индуистка митология|митологията]] и съдържат указания за практикуването на [[дхарма]], религиозния живот.{{hrf|Michaels|2004|}} Сред тези текстове най-важни, авторитетни и древни са [[Веди]]те. Наименованието „индуизъм“ произлиза от [[Индоарийски езици|индоарийската]] и [[санскрит]]ска дума „синдху“ (буквално „река“, „море“), индоарийското име на река [[Инд]] в северозападната част на [[Индийски субконтинент|Индийския субконтинент]].{{hrf|Flood|2008|3}}{{hrf|Flood|1996|6}} Първото писмено споменаване на индуси е в [[Персия|персийски]] надписи от VI век пр.
